David Mercado is a partner in Cravath’s Corporate Department. His practice is diverse, with an emphasis on financings and mergers and acquisitions in both Europe and Latin America. A significant component of Mr. Mercado’s practice involves private equity funds.
In mergers and acquisitions, Mr. Mercado represented Companhia de Bebidas das Américas (AmBev) in its merger with InterBrew, Cemex, S.A.B. de C.V. in its acquisition of Rinker Group Limited and Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional S.A. in its proposed acquisition of Corus Group plc. Recently, he has represented Banco Santander in its sale of its Latin American pension fund management companies in Colombia, Argentina, Mexico and Chile to ING Group. In addition, Mr. Mercado has been involved in securities offerings for GP Investments, Ltd., Ternium S.A., Gerdau S.A., Southern Copper Corporation, Celulosa Arauco, ENAP and Bavaria, among others.
Mr. Mercado has been repeatedly cited as a leading practitioner in finance and mergers and acquisitions law in Latin America by, among others, Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business from 2007 through 2011; Chambers Latin America: Latin America’s Leading Lawyers for Business from 2009 through 2012; and Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business from 2007 through 2010. He was also recognized by The Legal 500 as a leader in Global Offerings in 2009 and 2010.
Mr. Mercado was born in Houston, Texas. He received an A.B. from Columbia College in 1981 and a J.D. from Yale Law School in 1984. He joined Cravath in 1984 and became a partner in 1992. Mr. Mercado joined the Firm’s London office from the New York office in 2009.
