John E. Beerbower retired from Cravath’s Litigation Department in 2011. He had worked out of the Firm’s London office since January 2008. Mr. Beerbower had extensive litigation and arbitration experience across a wide-range of industries and areas of the law, including substantial involvement in the areas of M&A and antitrust. He had handled contract, intellectual property, bankruptcy, tax, securities, fraud and fiduciary duty cases and had been lead counsel in several large domestic and international arbitrations.
Some of Mr. Beerbower’s litigation and arbitration clients prior to his retirement included Her Majesty’s Treasury (the United Kingdom), Grupo Modelo, Millipore Co., McKinsey & Company, FGIC and the City of New York. He was lead litigation counsel in the Columbia Gas bankruptcy in the 1990s. During his career, Mr. Beerbower represented IBM, GEC plc, BP America, CBS, SCOR and Columbia Records in antitrust litigation. In addition, Mr. Beerbower regularly provided litigation and antitrust counseling and advice in connection with transactional work of the Firm. Many of the clients Mr. Beerbower had represented are non-U.S. companies, including Grupo Modelo, Vitro S.A., Sappi Limited, Ballard Power Systems, Deutsch Telecom, KLM Airlines, Unilever, Schering AG, Royal Dutch Shell, BAE Systems, Ineos plc, Tango S.A. and Teliasonora Denmark S.A.
Mr. Beerbower had been a long-standing member of the New York City Bar Association and served on its Committee on Professional and Judicial Ethics from 1988 to 1993. He was the Committee Chair from 1990 to 1993. He had also been a member of the New York State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Union Internationale des Avocats, the International Bar Association and the London Court of International Arbitration. He had been recognized by the International Who’s Who of Competition Lawyers and the International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers.
In addition to his legal work, Mr. Beerbower has served as a Trustee of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church and has been on the Board of Governors of the Mannes College of Music, a division of The New School University, for 15 years, including six years as Chairman of the Board.
Mr. Beerbower was born in Columbus, Ohio. He received a B.A. summa cum laude from Amherst College in 1970, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and a J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1973. After spending a year as a research student under the Faculty of Economics at the University of Cambridge, he joined Cravath in 1974 and became a partner in 1980.
