Practice Overview

Alien Tort Claims and International Torts

Cravath represents and advises clients on a broad range of matters involving international torts, in particular those arising under the Alien Tort Claims Act (“ATCA”) and the Torture Victim Protection Act (“TVPA”).

The Firm has acted as defense counsel in numerous lawsuits involving such claims, including litigation arising out of apartheid in South Africa and the United Nations Oil-for-Food Programme in Iraq. Because international tort cases typically involve multiple, and sometimes as many as dozens of, defendants, Cravath often plays a coordinating role, facilitating cooperation and communication among co-defendants’ counsel. This allows the Firm to ensure that its clients’ interests are advanced in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible.
