On November 21, 2019, Cravath partner Benjamin Gruenstein participated in the “Financial Services RegTech and Regulatory Compliance Forum,” which was presented by the Practising Law Institute and held in New York City. Ben delivered a talk entitled “Legal Ethics: The Lawyer’s Role When Something Goes Wrong in Financial Services,” which discussed the role of in‑house lawyers and compliance officers in internal investigations, including how to decide whether to report potential violations and how to abide by ethical obligations to clients.
Deals & Cases
On March 18, 2011, Cravath client IBM announced that it has entered into an agreement to settle allegations made by the Securities and Exchange Commission (the “SEC”), that it violated the books and records and internal control provisions of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Without admitting or denying the SEC’s allegations, IBM agreed to pay $10 million.
