March 26, 2014
On March 25, 2014, Cravath partner Christine A. Varney received GCR’s “Lawyer of the Year” Award at a ceremony held at the W Hotel in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes a competition lawyer whose superior technical skill, practical judgment and excellence in client service in 2013 demonstrates that she is among the best in the field. Recipients of the award are nominated and voted for by GCR’s readership of competition professionals worldwide. This year’s awards saw the largest turnout of voters to date, with over 3,000 votes cast by subscribers.
According to GCR, the “Lawyer of the Year” Award recognizes Ms. Varney for her far‑reaching and impressive successes in U.S. antitrust work since stepping down as Assistant Attorney General in 2011 to join Cravath. Of the many matters on which she has advised since joining the firm, two transactions were specifically shortlisted for this year’s “Matter of the Year” Award: ABInBev/Grupo Modelo and Thermo Fisher/Life Technologies.
