July 24, 2020
On July 23, 2020, Cravath partner Damaris Hernández spoke at the New York City Bar Association’s virtual fireside chat program entitled “Looking Back, Taking Action, Moving Forward,” which was hosted in connection with the 30th year of its 1L Diversity Fellowship Program for an audience of current Fellows and their employers. The event focused on diversity in the legal profession and the ways in which lawyers can help advance diversity efforts in the industry and contribute to movements dedicated to racial justice. The NYCBA’s Diversity Fellowship Program provides diverse and talented first year law students with the opportunity to gain valuable experience during the summer of their 1L year, a program in which Damaris took part following her first year at New York University School of Law.

Cravath is representing eight “juvenile lifers”—individuals sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after committing homicide offenses in New York when under 18 years of age—in a class action suit against the Commissioners of the New York Board of Parole. The suit claims the Parole Board violates the class members’ constitutional rights by making parole determinations that are not based on “demonstrated maturity and rehabilitation,” as is legally required for juvenile lifers.
