Four Decades for Justice
On February 8, 2016, retired Cravath litigation partner Rory O. Millson presented the International Arbitration Club of New York’s (IACNY’s) annual Smit‑Lowenfeld Prize for the best article in the field of international arbitration, along with Lawrence W. Newman, Presiding Member of IACNY. The award was given to Catharine Titi for her article entitled “Investment Arbitration in Latin America: The Uncertain Veracity of Preconceived Ideas,” which was published in Arbitration International, Volume 30, Issue 2.
Rory serves as chair of IACNY’s selection committee for the award. Ms. Titi’s winning article addresses whether Latin American states are hostile environments for investment arbitration. “Ms. Titi provides a thorough dissection of dispute resolution in Latin America with this article, diving into nuances and complexities that are often overlooked by the international arbitration community,” Mr. Millson said upon announcing the selection. “We are thrilled to include her in the canon of Smit‑Lowenfeld award recipients.”
In its fifth year, the IACNY’s annual Smit‑Lowenfeld prize honors the late professors Hans Smit, former Stanley H. Fuld Professor Emeritus at Columbia Law School, and Andreas Lowenfeld, former Rubin Professor Emeritus at the New York University School of Law, for their distinguished careers in the field of international arbitration, both as scholars and as arbitrators.
