Takata Compliance Monitor John Buretta Speaks at Press Conference with Civic Leaders in Los Angeles, California

On March 27, 2017, Cravath partner John D. Buretta organized and spoke at a press conference of civic and community leaders in Los Angeles, California, in his capacity as the Independent Monitor for Takata and the Coordinated Remedy Program. John and other community leaders convened at the Los Angeles Trade Technical College to address the public and members of the press in support of national efforts urging drivers affected by the Takata airbag recall, the largest safety recall in U.S. history, to schedule life‑saving, free repairs to their vehicles.

In December 2015, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced John’s selection as the Independent Monitor for Takata and the Coordinated Remedy Program, as part of a settlement agreement concerning Takata’s manufacture and sale of ammonium nitrate airbags. John, whose prior experience includes serving as a senior official overseeing the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division, assists in the Coordinated Remedy Program with respect to Takata and all affected vehicle manufacturers, overseeing Takata’s safety and compliance programs and other obligations under the NHTSA settlement.

To determine if your car has a defective airbag inflator, visit www.AirbagRecall.com and enter your vehicle identification number (VIN).

Additional information about the monitorship is available at TakataMonitor.org. Members of the public can also use the TakataMonitor.org website to file confidential, anonymous reports, and to communicate with the Independent Monitor.

In addition to John, Cravath litigation partner Benjamin Gruenstein is also assisting with the monitorship.
