Asylum Granted in Pro Bono Persecution Case

On June 9, 2010, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services division granted asylum to a Cravath pro bono client who feared persecution in his native country of Turkey on the basis of his sexual orientation. His case had been referred to Cravath by Immigration Equality, a national organization that advocates for equal immigration rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and HIV-positive community. The Cravath team included partner Michael T. Reynolds and associates Pierre J. Bouchard, James Derek Mize and Matthew H. Bloom.

Pro Bono Appellate Victory in Third Circuit En Banc Criminal Constitutional Rights Case, “United States v. Lewis”
On September 16, 2015, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, sitting en banc, vacated defendant Jermel Lewis’s criminal sentence and remanded for resentencing in United States v. Lewis. On behalf of Amachi, Inc., a nonprofit organization that tutors children of prisoners, Cravath filed an amicus curiae brief in support of Mr. Lewis and argued before the en banc court.
