Senator Gillibrand and Cravath Help Reunite Family with Ailing Infant

With the assistance of United States Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Cravath secured a visitor visa for the grandmother of a Farmingville, New York, infant so that she can come to the United States to assist with the care of the two siblings of her ailing grandson. Upon learning that the grandmother’s initial visa petition had been denied, Cravath re-filed the necessary documentation with the U.S. Consulate in Bogota, Colombia. Senator Gillibrand requested that the U.S. Consulate grant an expedited consular appointment and full and fair consideration of the urgent circumstances. The arrival of the family’s grandmother, who will assist with the care of two of the family’s children, will enable the father to continue to provide for his family financially while the mother provides 24-hour-a-day to their third child, a four-month-old boy who suffers from dilated cardiomyopathy and awaits a life-saving heart transplant.
The case was referred to Cravath through the Firm’s Children’s Hospital Program, a collaboration between Cravath and Volunteers of Legal Services (VOLS) through which Cravath provides free representation to Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital and Montefiore Children’s Hospital patients and their families to address legal needs that affect the children’s medical care. Over the past decade, Cravath’s Hospital Program has helped more than one hundred families in New York City.

Cravath’s Incarcerated Survivors Initiative Secures Release of Domestic Abuse Survivor
On November 28, 2023, the Queens County Criminal Court entered an order on consent resentencing pro bono client A.M. and securing her release. A.M. had been incarcerated since June 2010. She was originally sentenced in June 2011, pursuant to a plea agreement, to a 20‑year determinate sentence plus five years’ post‑release supervision for first‑degree manslaughter after her romantic partner, who had subjected her to severe domestic abuse, killed her former partner, who had sex trafficked her and also subjected her to severe domestic abuse.
