Scott B. Reents focuses on electronic discovery and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies to legal practice.
Mr. Reents represents clients in a variety of litigation matters, regulatory matters and internal investigations. He oversees the Firm’s data analytics and e‑discovery work and speaks and writes about topics related to digital evidence and AI. Mr. Reents serves on several working groups and commissions focused on the effective use of technology in legal practice and the courts.

Mr. Reents received a B.A. in Economics from Swarthmore College in 1996, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and a J.D. from Stanford Law School in 2007, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif. Mr. Reents served as a law clerk to Hon. Gerard E. Lynch of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Prior to practicing law, Mr. Reents worked in the technology industry for eight years. He has served as the Firm’s Lead Attorney for Data Analytics and E‑Discovery. Mr. Reents was named of counsel in 2023.

On October 31, 2024, Sterling Check Corp. announced the closing of its acquisition by First Advantage Corporation, with a transaction value of approximately $2.2 billion. Sterling and First Advantage are both global providers of technology‑enabled background and identity verification services. As publicly announced, the companies entered a merger agreement on February 29, 2024, and received second requests from the Department of Justice on May 28, 2024. The parties announced the satisfaction of regulatory closing conditions on October 29, 2024. Cravath represented Sterling on all antitrust matters in connection with the transaction.

In March 2025, the Court Modernization Action Committee (“CMAC”) published its 2024 progress report, entitled the “2024 New York State Court Modernization Progress Report,” co-authored by Cravath of counsel and CMAC Co-Chair Scott B. Reents. The report outlines the continued progress of the New York State Courts in 2024, with recommendations for expanding and refining the use of virtual proceedings and enhancing systems for communicating with court users, among other improvements. The CMAC was formed by the New York State Unified Court System judicial leadership to advance court innovations.

On April 11, 2024, the New York State Unified Court System announced the formation of an advisory panel to study the impact of artificial intelligence on the New York state courts, including the practical, legal and ethical risks posed by its use. Cravath of counsel Scott B. Reents was appointed to be a member of the advisory committee, alongside other legal technology experts, judges, court administrators, attorneys, legislators and academics.

On April 10, 2024, Cravath of counsel Scott Reents participated in the 2024 Legal Technology Symposium, which was hosted by the Harvard Journal of Law & Technology and the Harvard Law & Technology Society, in Cambridge, MA. The event convened judges, chief technology officers, technology leaders at startups, companies and law firms to discuss the evolving intersection of law and technological innovation. Scott spoke on a panel entitled “New Tech in Law Firms,” which examined the challenge of integrating new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, into the law firm workflow.

The report highlights strides the court system has made in leveraging technology to streamline operations and provides recommendations for the continued advancement of the courts’ post‑pandemic modernization efforts. The CMAC was formed to support and advise the New York State Court System in implementing technology initiatives to increase efficiency and enhance access to equal justice.
