Richard J. Hiegel

Retired Partner, Tax

Richard J. Hiegel retired from Cravath’s Tax Department in 1996. He had been the Head of the Department since 1987. Mr. Hiegel’s tax practice included advising on major corporate transactions and representing corporate clients before the Internal Revenue Service, the New York State and City Tax Departments and various Federal and New York courts, including the United States Supreme Court.

Mr. Hiegel served as lecturer and panelist at seminars and conferences sponsored by various organizations, including the New York State Bar Association, American Law Institute, American Bar Association, Bank Tax Institute and Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts.

From 1974 to 1996, Mr. Hiegel was a member of the Executive Committee of the New York State Bar Association’s Tax Section, which prepares and submits to Congress, the Treasury Department, the Internal Revenue Service and the New York State and City Tax Departments reports on proposed tax legislation and regulations from an objective and primarily technical point of view. He served as the Section’s Chairman from 1984 to 1985. From 1988 to 1998, he was a Trustee and a Member of the Policy Council of the Tax Foundation in Washington, D.C., and from 1990 to 1998, he was a Fellow in the American College of Tax Counsel. He was also a member of the New York City Bar Association and the American Bar Association.

Mr. Hiegel has served on the Board of Visitors and the Dean’s Council for Columbia Law School, as a Trustee for the Grace Church School, and as a Vice Chair for the Southampton Hospital Association’s Board of Directors. He was also a member of the Quogue Field Club and served as Governor and President.

Mr. Hiegel was born in Jackson Heights, New York. He received an A.B. from Columbia University in 1956, served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1959 and received an LL.B. from Columbia Law School in 1962, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and the Editor‑in‑Chief of the Law Review. After graduation, he served as a law clerk to Hon. John M. Harlan of the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Hiegel joined Cravath in 1963 and became a partner in 1969.
