Four Decades for Justice
Thomas R. Brome retired from Cravath’s Corporate Department in 2007. Mr. Brome was a generalist corporate lawyer who advised a number of the Firm’s corporate clients on a broad range of general corporate and finance matters. He represented the underwriters on KKR’s, Apollo’s and Polygon’s offshore public offerings and listings.
Mr. Brome’s practice included representing Lehman Brothers, Salomon Smith Barney and other investment banks on a variety of public offerings, including IPOs. He represented the underwriters on the initial registered Yankee bond offerings for foreign governments, including Hungary, Israel and Indonesia, as well as on the initial public offerings of Empire Airlines, America West Airlines and Northwest Airlines. Throughout his career he represented the underwriters for practically all public offerings and government financing programs for rural electric cooperatives.
Mr. Brome was the President of The Legal Aid Society from 1994 to 1996, where he was also a Director from 1988 to 1998, and has been a member of the President’s Council since then. Mr. Brome has been a Trustee of the Law Center Foundation of NYU School of Law since 1994 and Vice Chairman since 2003. He has also had memberships in the American Bar Association, the New York City Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association.
In addition to his legal work, Mr. Brome was the President of the Ridgewood, New Jersey, Board of Education from 1991 to 1992 and of the Ridgewood Public Education Foundation from 1993 to 1996, of which he was a Director from 1992 to 2002. He was a Trustee of The Valley Hospital of Ridgewood from 2005 to 2011.
Mr. Brome was born in New York, New York. He received a B.A. magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1964 and an LL.B. cum laude from New York University School of Law in 1967, where he was an Article and Book Review Editor of the Law Review, a Root‑Tilden Scholar and elected to the Order of the Coif. Before joining Cravath, Mr. Brome served as a law clerk to Justice Warren E. Burger, then of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
Mr. Brome joined Cravath in 1968 and became a partner in 1975. He served as the Head of the Firm’s Corporate Department from 1993 to 1998.
