Pro Bono Client Reaches Settlement in Rikers Island Case

On February 11, 2019, Cravath and The Legal Aid Society announced a substantial monetary settlement on behalf of their client, “Jane Doe,” who was abused by two New York City Department of Correction officers while she was a pre‑trial detainee on Rikers Island. The lawsuit was filed in August 2018 against the City of New York and the two New York City Department of Correction officers. The complaint detailed the defendants’ violations of “Jane Doe’s constitutional rights to be protected from rape, sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and retaliation.”
The Cravath team worked alongside Legal Aid on behalf of Jane Doe, and was led by partner Antony L. Ryan and associate Brittany L. Sukiennik, and included associate Molly M. Jamison. Ryan Sila and Laura Baron also worked on the matter.

Pro Bono Appellate Victory in Third Circuit En Banc Criminal Constitutional Rights Case, “United States v. Lewis”
On September 16, 2015, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, sitting en banc, vacated defendant Jermel Lewis’s criminal sentence and remanded for resentencing in United States v. Lewis. On behalf of Amachi, Inc., a nonprofit organization that tutors children of prisoners, Cravath filed an amicus curiae brief in support of Mr. Lewis and argued before the en banc court.
