Takata Compliance Monitor John Buretta Organizes Press Conference with Automakers and Civic Leaders in Weston, Florida

On June 7, 2018 Cravath partner John D. Buretta organized a press conference of civic and community leaders in Weston, Florida, in his capacity as the Independent Monitor for Takata and the Coordinated Remedy Program. John, along with civic and community leaders and volunteers, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”), Daimler Vans, FCA US LLC, Ford Motor Co., General Motors, Mazda and Volkswagen convened at Broward College to address the public and members of the press to share new data and support national efforts urging drivers affected by the Takata airbag recall, the largest safety recall in U.S. history, to schedule life‑saving, free repairs to their vehicles.

In December 2015, John was selected by NHTSA to serve as the Independent Monitor for Takata and the Coordinated Remedy Program, as part of a settlement agreement concerning Takata’s manufacture and sale of ammonium nitrate airbags. In April 2017, John was appointed by the U.S. Department of Justice to serve as compliance monitor regarding the worldwide operations of Takata Corporation, headquartered in Japan.
