Takata Compliance Monitor John Buretta Testifies Alongside Community Leaders in Houston, Texas

On July 12, 2016, Cravath partner John D. Buretta testified alongside community leaders in Houston, Texas, in his capacity as the Independent Monitor for Takata and the Coordinated Remedy Program. John and other civic and community leaders convened at Houston City Hall and spoke to the public and members of the press in support of a city‑wide call‑to‑action, urging drivers affected by the Takata airbag recall, the largest safety recall in U.S. history, to schedule life‑saving, free repairs to their vehicles with local dealerships.

In December 2015, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced John’s selection as the Independent Monitor for Takata and the Coordinated Remedy Program, as part of a settlement agreement concerning Takata’s manufacture and sale of ammonium nitrate airbags. John, whose prior experience includes serving as a senior official overseeing the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division, assists in the Coordinated Remedy Program with respect to Takata and all affected vehicle manufacturers, overseeing Takata’s safety and compliance programs and other obligations under the NHTSA settlement.
